The first and the most common myth about FIBCs is that you must ensure that you use a food-grade bulk bag approved by FDA to transport your foods. Many-a-times retailers might ask you for inflated prices, telling you that a certain bag is FDA-approved. The reality is that the FDA does not provide any approval, accreditation or certificates to FIBCs. There are a few criteria, however, that have been published by FDA. For example, a bag must be made out of 100% virgin polypropylene resin in order to store and transfer food and that is what manufacturers and suppliers mean when they say that their bags are FDA-approved.
Even if your bag is made out of 100% virgin polypropylene, it cannot be termed hygienic unless proper care has been taken during the entire production process. Some of the criteria that are observed during the process to ensure no contamination are pest control, proper ventilation, detection of unwanted metal, record keeping, a clean wardrobe of all the personnel involved, proper hygiene of the personnel involved and hazard analysis.
Most of the bulk bags in the industry are made out of recyclable materials and the industry itself puts a lot of focus on the recycling part. Additionally, if taken care of properly, FIBCs can be used multiple times, bringing down the costs and waste generated. First, it is important to note what GFSI is. GFSI stands for Global Food Safety Initiative which was founded in the year 2000. It is correct that GFSI is responsible for ensuring the safe packaging and delivery of food products but GFSI does not offer any types of accreditations or certification. Therefore, when someone tells you that their bulk bags are GFSI accredited, they are either making a false statement, or they mean that they have a third-party certificate or accreditation that has been recognised by GFSI.
